Thank you for visiting Art & Beautiful Things, where we enjoy finding and preserving beautiful pieces from the past. Vintage Christmas decorations are especially wonderful because each one carries a little bit of holiday history with them.

Offered here is a wonderfully kitschy, oversized vintage Christmas card box from the F. W. Woolworth Company, believed to date to the 1960s. With its brilliant Christmas-red background, extravagant gold lettering, decorative black scrollwork, and absolutely delightful rosy-cheeked Santa Claus, this charming old box is a little piece of American Christmas nostalgia!

Originally designed to hold 50 assorted Christmas greeting cards, the box bears the name “The Prestige Assortment” in sweeping metallic gold script. At its center is a beautifully illustrated, old-fashioned Santa with sparkling eyes, rosy cheeks, a magnificent flowing white beard, and a jaunty red cap decorated with holly. Against a rich evergreen background sprinkled with golden snowflakes, his wonderfully expressive face practically glows with Christmas cheer.

The oversized presentation is especially appealing. Measuring approximately 15 inches tall and 10 inches wide, this is no ordinary little greeting-card box! Its generous proportions, vivid colors, and wonderfully sentimental Santa illustration make it an eye-catching piece of vintage holiday decor.

The original yellow-and-black Woolworth price sticker remains attached to the front, proudly advertising the assortment for just $1.67. What a wonderful reminder of Christmas shopping at the old five-and-dime stores, when families browsed aisles filled with sparkling ornaments, tinsel, holiday cards, and colorful seasonal displays.

The side of the box retains the original Woolworth branding, including the company’s distinctive geometric logo and the printed statement identifying the F. W. Woolworth Company of New York as distributor. The packaging is also marked “Litho in U.S.A.”

Although the Santa artwork recalls earlier Christmas illustrations, the printed New York ZIP code establishes that the packaging dates to 1963 or later, making a 1960s attribution plausible.

There is something especially charming about preserving the packaging itself. Long after the Christmas cards have disappeared, this wonderfully colorful box remains a delightful example of mid-century commercial Christmas art.

Perfect for displaying alongside vintage Shiny Brite ornaments, Gurley candles, ceramic Christmas trees, old-fashioned tinsel, and other nostalgic holiday treasures. It would also make a charming backdrop for a Christmas vignette or a festive addition to a collection of vintage advertising and department-store memorabilia.

This listing is for the original EMPTY Christmas card box only. No greeting cards are included.

Condition

Good vintage condition with visible wear consistent with age, previous use, and storage.

The box exhibits edge and corner wear, surface scratches, scuffs, creasing, and some separation and wear along the cardboard seams. Old tape and tape residue are present, and the unprinted cardboard interior shows age-related discoloration.

The colorful illustrated front remains wonderfully attractive, retaining its bold red background, gold lettering, and charming Santa Claus artwork.

The original Woolworth $1.67 price sticker remains attached.

This is an empty vintage cardboard box, offered as found without restoration. Please carefully examine all photographs, as they are an important part of the description.

Our Condition Rating

Excellent – We almost never rate anything as excellent because to us, excellent means brand new and still in packaging. If we’ve only removed it from the box for photography, it still receives a "very good" rating.

Very Good – This is where most of our items fall. To us, this means as close to excellent as possible: museum-quality, with no imperfections unless noted (and even then, only very minor ones).

Good – Acceptable. Worth owning, especially if it’s difficult to find in better condition.

Fair – Rough condition. Only rated fair if the item has substantial historical value or is salvage-worthy.
