Jean Marais Black Vase Head of a Woman Carrying an Urn Vase

$6,500.00

A striking and soulful piece, this 1950s Jean Marais pottery vase captures the grace of feminine beauty through sculptural form. Its expressive face and earthy glaze tones reflect the artistry of post-war European ceramics — a celebration of emotion, culture, and craft. Perfect as a centerpiece or statement collectible for the discerning art lover. Jean Alfred Marais was a French actor, film director, theatre director, visual artist, writer, photographer, painter and sculptor.  Two of his most notable sculptures include “Le Passe-Muraille”(The Walker through Walls) a large bronze monument in Paris and the terracotta “Head of a Woman Carrying an Urn” vase. He primarily worked with bronze and terracotta.  His style was predominately figurative and often depicts stylized versions of himself and friends. He collaborated frequently with Jean Cocteau, his sculptures styles being inspired by Cocteau’s work. He was a prolific painter and ceramist as well.

The sculpture measures 23 1/2″ height and 9″ diameter.

Art & Beautiful Things

This pottery vase was created by Jean Marais, a mid-20th-century European ceramicist known for sculptural tableware and decorative ceramics. Dating from 1950, the piece depicts a woman’s head, a popular motif in post-war French and Belgian art pottery.

Made of high-quality ceramic, the vase is hand-modeled and finished with smooth, muted glazes, demonstrating Marais’ attention to detail and mastery of form. Jean Marais’ work is recognized for combining functionality with decorative appeal, making his vases suitable for both display and practical use.

This vase originates from Western Europe, likely France or Belgium, and reflects the mid-century trend in ceramic sculpture that emphasized human figures and portraiture. Its proportions and craftsmanship are characteristic of Marais’ work during this period.

Collectors value Jean Marais’ pottery for its rarity and quality, especially signed or well-documented pieces. This woman head vase is in excellent condition, making it a notable addition to any mid-century European ceramics collection. Its size, materials, and form are typical of Marais’ 1950s production, offering both historical and aesthetic significance.

Our Condition Rating

Excellent – We almost never rate anything as excellent because to us, excellent means brand new and still in packaging. If we’ve only removed it from the box for photography, it still receives a "very good" rating.

Very Good – This is where most of our items fall. To us, this means as close to excellent as possible: museum-quality, with no imperfections unless noted (and even then, only very minor ones).

Good – Acceptable. Worth owning, especially if it’s difficult to find in better condition.

Fair – Rough condition. Only rated fair if the item has substantial historical value or is salvage-worthy.
